Every actor needs to have professional goals

Every actor needs to have goals. And I’m not talking dreams here. I’m talking real tangible goals.

It’s a difficult enough career just being an actor, but to not have a clear goal makes it almost impossible. These goals need to be attainable and specific for what you want to achieve and where you want to be in a given time frame.

Goals can include workshops, classes and activities that help take you to your planned success story.

So you do have a success story in mind don’t you? Because this is where you need to start and work backwards from there. Now I’m not advocating having the success story of  “Im going to be the next Meryl Streep or Brad Pitt”.

These are not attainable goals.

Every goal be it in acting or life, needs to be achievable and realistic. And every goal needs to be specific. Without specificity you will not succeed. It will just be a dream.

To be specific, you need individual steps with time lines.

What are your passions?

Your skills?

And your individual talent? Are you better at comedy or drama? Theatre or film? Are you a writer? A director?

Creating your own work is one of the skills you come away with having completed our Creating Compelling Characters Course.

For example you may have on your list:

  1. Do more acting classes
  2. Do a writers course/ directors curse
  3. Work on my contacts list
  4. Reach out to other like minded communities
  5. Get a job that works with my acting schedule

Though these are good goals, they are not specific enough.

What are your classes and when?

How often do you plan to do them?

What is your contact list and how do you plan to contact them?

What are your other communities and how do you propose to be in contact?

You must be specific as you must be consistent.

Consistency is just as important as having a plan.

Write them down in a place that you see them every day and make yourself accountable. Where do you want to be in 1 years time? 2 years and 5 years time? And further. And be mindful not to seek solutions but to seek objectives. Tangible objectives.
