How To Find the Best Agent

We are constantly being asked “How do I find the best agent for me? “ or “ can you recommend a good agent?”

The answer to these questions is -it’s an individual thing and for that reason we cannot recommend an agent for you. Not to mention it is unethical I believe to recommend someone over someone else.

However, we will help wherever we possibly can.

Possibly the most important person in your career is your agent and it is this relationship which is vital to that of the actor.

If you do not have a relationship with your agent then a big opportunity and gaping hole will be found in your career.

In our video series: Networking in the Digital Age, we look at how to connect and communicate effectively and efficiently with the Decision Makers of your career. And your agent is and needs to be your best advocate!

So, let’s get into it.

The first thing you need is to find the right agent. Once found, then it is up to you to make sure that agent truly knows and understands who you are and what work you are capable of performing.

Again it is all about communications and relationships.

The first thing you need to do is do your research. I know we keep coming up with the same words here at TAT : ‘research research research’. But the more you know about someone, the better chance you have of making an informed decision.

The type of questions to ask is: What character types do they have on their books? And how many are in your ‘brand’ category?

Not forgetting the obvious questions that must be asked like: where are they based? What is their commission structure? How long have they been in business etc.

We suggest having a short list of maybe 3 – 4 different agents. Each one should be offering you something else apart from the norm.

What is it that you like about this agent?

Before you submit make sure you have all your documents ready in case they ask for them the very next day. Be ready!

So what do you need to be ready? Your new photo (one that honestly reflects you rather than the glam one that your mother loves); your updated CV and finally and most importantly either your show reel or better still a series of self tapes showing who you are and what you can do.

Our Creating Compelling Characters course does just that. It teaches you how to reach out to Agents & CD’s, showing them your brand and your qualities by creating compelling characters. Click here for more info.
