Self Taping Academy
🎬 Have you recorded more self-tapes than you can count — only to hear nothing back? No callbacks, no traction, no “we’d like to see more”?
Then this course is for you. Because self-taping isn’t just about delivering the lines. It’s about creating a performance that makes a Casting Director stop scrolling and take notice.
This course is designed for actors who:
- ⭐ Are fighting to get a foothold in the industry
- ⭐ Keep getting auditions that don’t reflect their real ability
- ⭐ Want to level up their agent, their network, and their career opportunities
Here’s the truth: Casting Directors watch dozens of tapes for the same role. And most of them blur into one — same delivery, same choices, same forgettable performances.
👉 Your job? Make sure your tape isn’t the one they skip past. Make it the one they remember. And that’s exactly what we’ll teach you how to do.
OK, let’s get this party started!
And I hope you relate to your journey here at STS as a party! Well, at least a journey and time that is full of enjoyment and meeting new people. And new concepts.
We aim to change your thinking about how an actor can use a self tape to find new territory. Find a new way of looking at your self tapes.
The self tape is not a test of your ability.
It is an exploration of your suitability for a role.
Today we are looking at the Audition Audience. That small group of people who sit in judgement of you.
There are not many of them. But each and every one of them can change the course of your career.
In this lesson we are exploring how to take our tips and ideas and use them in the real world. For a real member of the audition audience.
And how to make them pay attention. To notice you for the first time.
Or to notice a new you!
There are three qualities that every movie star has. And if you are going to succeed you need to also have those qualities.
Don’t worry, I am not asking you to be a brain surgeon.
But simply to have appeal.
So this lesson in my opinion, is the meat and potatoes of Self Taping School. Why? Because this is where our training takes a big departure away from traditional drama techniques.
This lesson takes the well know established format of the audition space, and turns it upside down.
There is an important concept in this lesson. And for many of our member it takes a while to get used to.
But ultimately, it will be the foundation of delivering the difference between your self tape, and everyone elses.
In the audition world of The Audition Technique, the actor holds all the power. For the character. For the scene.
But this power is not given to you. You must take it.
Which is tough (impossible!) to do in the room, but easy peasy in the self tape space in your home
And remember, actors were born to make mistakes. Not to deliver perfection.
Moments ……. Happen by accident. But only if you let them.
99.99% of actors will do a second take if they fluff a line. Why? They are seeking perfection (which we spoke about in the last lesson.
But it is super dooper difficult to have moments in the audition space. Because it is sterile.
Find your own stamp on the character by letting outside factors impact your delivery and your eyeline.
Because only then have you delivered a version if this audition that is unique to you.
Today we are exploring things that distract you. In effect, all I want you to know is that speaking TO the reader, AT the reader is as interesting as paint drying.
The first thing you have to come to terms with if you are to enjoy actors success is there are two types of roles:
- The roles you would love to play (heroes, spies, bad guys etc)
- The roles you were born to play (perhaps nerds, boffins, losers)
Because when you capture the niche that is unique to you, and that your agent knows it, and the casting director knows it, then you get audition opportunities for roles you were born to play.
We have an idea here at The Audition Technique. And that idea is that you can speak volumes without a script.
We have called it an unscripted selfie.
A self tape that is done without a script. Just simply a character.
This lesson shows you how.
How to capture the role you were born to play.
It is not rocket science but it does need you to research and then, armed with that information, make decisions and choices that trigger a response from your targeted Casting Director. Or Agent.
And then let’s talk about relationships
Do you have superiority? Or inferiority?
Can’t decide? Well you need to. Because then you have created a relationship that is based in drama.
What I am talking about is status.
Brand speaks volumes. A targeted conversation directly to people who influence your career.
This conversation is pitched perfectly when you make the right brand choice.
And brand, is not one thing.
Remember ….. character is king
A very good actor finds clues on the page for their choice of character. And with that in mind, they build a mental picture of the type of character that pops.
For them, not for everyone.
And that must be your goal
In this lesson we are exploring how to take our tips and ideas and use them in the real world. For a real member of the audition audience.
And how to make them pay attention. To notice you for the first time.
Or to notice a new you!
Across 15 dynamic video lessons, you’ll discover how to break the right rules of self-taping.
🎭 The truth is, the acting world loves to shove performers into a straitjacket of “safe choices.” Safe is forgettable. Safe doesn’t book the job.
This course teaches you:
- Which rules to bend (and which to break)
- How to unlearn the dull, predictable habits other teachers drill into actors
- How to take smart, calculated risks that grab a Casting Director’s attention — for all the right reasons
By the end, you won’t just have another self-tape. You’ll have a one-of-a-kind performance that refuses to be forgotten — even in a sea of 60 tapes.
✨ Imagine this:
- The Casting Director is excited to see you again
- They pass your tape along to producers and directors
- You’ve left a lasting impression that makes them remember exactly when to call you in
- Your tape doesn’t just get watched — it lives rent-free in their head
This is the self-taping revolution. And it comes straight from Greg Apps.
